Jurassic Jelly

We were tasked with recreating the famous Jelly scene from Jurassic Park (1993) in groups of threes. We spent the first of three lessons planning, which consisted of watching the clip and creating a shot-list, gathering props and scouting for locations to film. The second lesson, we begun filming and managed to get all of our shots done. And during the final lesson, we started editing and all of it was complete by the end of the three lessons.

(Jurassic Jelly, 2021)

Find three shots you are proud of...

I am proud of this shot because to me it is really interesting. I feel like it shows the fear of the boy playing the video-games well as the push-in becomes more invasive, telling the audience that there is something wrong.

This was a difficult shot to do, and for that reason I feel proud of it. It look a lot of planning to show the silhouette of the dinosaur. and it didn’t turn out too bad.

This shot is really cool, as much like the first shot I mentioned I was proud of. The push-in is interesting and very invasive of the character within the frame, making the audience feel more immersed.

Pick at least one shot you think could have been improved and explain why?

This shot could have been improved because it was shaky an overall seemed out of focus. It also feels like it lacks anything that might make it interesting, the lighting doesn’t have anything special to it and it is overall quite dull looking.

What part of the clip are you most proud of and why?

I really like this shot because of the camera movement. The way that the camera gets closer to the boy as he turns around to look at the camera flows really nicely. It took us three to four shots to get the one that we wanted, but I am glad that we continued to shoot until we got to this one, because I am happy with it.

What was the most difficult part to film and why? How did you overcome the difficulties...

The most difficult part to film were the shots where the dinosaur breathes on the window in the door. It was challenging because of the reflection. The camera kept on showing in the glass, and so in order to fix the issue, we chose to turn all of the light inside off, and just primarily use the lights from outside.

Did you learn anything new from the process?

This task really showed me that I need to improve my editing, I opened final cut and felt like I had never seen it before, despite the fact that I took Film for GCSE’s. I know that I am going to watch a lot of tutorials and work with other people so that my the time I have to edit my own film, I will have the skills to feel comfortable editing.
